Prevention
While companions animals do go missing from time to time, please
consider the following tips to prevent your companion from disappearing.
Microchipping your pet is one of the best ways to keep your companion
from becoming lost.
Life Savers Animal Rescue offers AVID Microchipping for $25.00. Please
contact Linda Crawford at 406-883-5978
- Enclosed yards and a watchful eye are the best way to keep your
companion at home. Being aware of behaviors such as digging under fences
or a fear of fireworks and whether you companion has been fixed can help
to keep your companion from becoming lost.
- Posting signs that there are loose dogs in your yard may also help to
remind guests to close the gate lest your companion escape.
Often times, when a dog is lost, local authorities or good Samaritans
will pick up the animal and attempt to identify the owner. In many cases,
it is difficult to identify lost companion animals because of a lack of
identification tags or lack of a microchip.
- Pet I.D. tags are available from many veterinarians and at Polson Pet
and Seed Company, 406-883-0822.
- Veterinarians issue rabies tags when your companion has his or her
vaccinations. It is best to keep these tags on your companion somehow, as
this is an excellent way to identify your companion if he or she becomes
lost. Owners within Polson City limits must show proof of a rabies
vaccination to license their companion.
- If you live in the limits of the City of Polson, licensing of dogs is
required. This helps Polson City Animal Control to identify some
companions and can circumvent the costly process which ensues if no
identification of a companion is available.
